Divisa vs Splitwise: receipts, currencies and settling up

A shared-expense app needs to answer two questions: what was my fair share, and what do I actually send? Here is how Divisa and Splitwise approach the work between those two answers.

The quick answer

Splitwise is available now on iPhone, Android and the web, with general expense tracking and paid Pro features for receipt scanning and currency conversion. Divisa is being built around scanning a bill, assigning its items and calculating what each person owes in the recipient’s currency. Divisa’s public app store listings are coming soon; this is a feature comparison, not a claim that it is already a downloadable replacement.

For dinner, compare item assignment and review

An equal split is quick when everyone agrees to it. It becomes less useful when one person had a salad, another ordered several drinks, and three people shared a starter. The useful feature is being able to connect each receipt line to the people who shared it.

Divisa’s flow starts with the receipt. You check the extracted names and prices, fix mistakes or missing lines, then select people for each item. Shared items can have different weights. Tax, service and tip are allocated in proportion to the item shares. Review those amounts against the receipt before continuing, especially when a service charge is already included.

Splitwise also supports unequal and itemised expenses. Its help page describes exact amounts, percentages, shares and itemisation; scanning a receipt on mobile is a Pro feature. Calling Splitwise an equal-split-only app would be inaccurate.

For a useful comparison, try one complicated bill rather than an evenly divided coffee order. Check whether you can correct a misread price, exclude someone from a shared dish and account for the final penny. Our restaurant bill guide explains those checks.

The currency difference is in the settlement

Splitwise keeps balances separate by currency unless you convert them. Its Pro tool converts group or friendship expenses into your default currency. Changing an expense’s currency label alone does not perform the conversion.

Divisa calculates a settlement in the home currency of the person receiving it. The original bill can be in euros while that person is owed pounds. A saved exchange-rate snapshot supplies the calculation; conversion requires a usable rate for the currencies involved.

Example: a €60 dinner, paid back in pounds

Mia pays €60 for a dinner shared equally with you. Your share is €30. Suppose Mia’s home currency is GBP and the saved rate is €1 = £0.85. The settlement to Mia is £25.50. You do not need to recreate the split and currency calculation in a separate calculator.

This rate is illustrative, not a live quote. If Mia’s home currency were EUR instead, the amount owed to her would be €30; a pound figure shown to a GBP payer would be an estimate. The payment provider’s conversion and fees can affect what leaves your account. Always check the amount and currency the recipient will receive.

That distinction matters more than a long currency list: entering a foreign-currency bill, converting a balance and delivering money are separate steps. See the mixed-currency splitting guide for the full example.

Calculation and payment are separate choices

Divisa lets a recipient save payment details such as PayPal, Venmo, an IBAN or a custom method. Where an amount-bearing link is supported, it can open the payment service; otherwise you copy the details. This does not connect every wallet to every other wallet, and Divisa does not hold or send your money.

Splitwise offers real payment options in supported locations. Its payment documentation lists Splitwise Pay and third-party integrations in the US, plus Pay by Bank in selected European countries. The latter does not support cross-currency payments. Payments made elsewhere can also be recorded.

Choose a method both people can actually use for the required currency. Complete the transfer in that service, then record it as paid. A calculated balance or an opened payment link is not proof that money arrived.

Which one fits your group?

Splitwise is a practical choice if your group needs an available app today, already keeps its history there, or wants a browser-based expense ledger. Staying with an existing group can be simpler than asking everyone to rebuild their records.

Its current Pro help page lists a limit of four daily expenses for free users and unlimited expenses for Pro. It also says only Pro subscribers can initiate Pro receipt scanning and conversion, while other group members can see the resulting expenses. Check the subscription offer in your account for current pricing and any trip-plan terms; we are not presenting one country’s price as a universal cost.

Divisa is worth following if your recurring problem is a messy receipt followed by people paying back in different currencies. You can try the currency example and see the app walkthrough now. Its public app store listings are still coming soon, so a group departing today should choose an available tool.

Common questions

Can Splitwise split a receipt by individual items?

Yes. Splitwise documents itemised expenses, and its Pro subscription includes mobile receipt scanning with item assignment. Divisa also has a scan, review and assign workflow; item splitting is not exclusive to Divisa.

Does Splitwise convert currencies for free?

Splitwise records expenses in different currencies and keeps those balances separate by default. Its automatic conversion of group or friendship expenses into a default currency is a Pro feature, according to its help pages checked on 14 September 2026.

Does Divisa automatically send the converted payment?

No. Divisa calculates what is owed, offers supported payment links or copied details, and lets you record payment status. Your payment provider makes the transfer and applies its own exchange rate and fees where relevant.

Can I download Divisa instead of Splitwise today?

Divisa’s public app store listings are coming soon as of 14 September 2026. The website has an interactive example and app previews. Splitwise is already available on iPhone, Android and the web.
